Our baby girl has been in the hospital since Friday afternoon. This is certainly not how I expected to spend the beginning of our Spring Break, but here's how it all went down...
Friday morning around 4:30 Lucy woke up crying and she wasn't interested in eating. I held her for a while and realized that she was getting warmer and warmer so I took her temperature - 104.3. I knew that was extremely high for a baby her age but I gave her medicine and took it again about 45 minutes later - 102.2. I ended up rocking her for about 2 hours and then around 6:30 she finally ate and then went to sleep. I called the doctor as soon as they opened and of course they wanted to see us. After 2 1/2 hours there, they took blood and urine and the doctor said he would call me that afternoon with the results. We both agreed that she probably just had the same virus that Anna and Sam had earlier in the week but because of her age it was better just to run the tests to verify that.
That afternoon our pediatrician called and told us to head to the hospital, her white cell count was high and she would need to spend the night in order to figure out what was going on. He had already called ahead to tell them we were coming - lovely. It was a huge shock since I really expected him to say it was viral and there's nothing to do but wait it out. Thankfully Jack and Anna were already en route to the Upstate with Ninny and Grandy to get their spring break started. Marshall left work and the four of us packed bags and headed to the Children's Hospital in Augusta.
They were ready for us in the ER triage room where Lucy had her blood pressure, oxygen levels, and temperature taken.
The ER doctor checked her out and then we headed upstairs to a room where she got her huge blue hospital gown.
Marshall and Sam eventually went home and I stayed the night with Lucy in the hospital. The next day we got a diagnosis of UTI and started Rocephin shots, which are taken every 24 hours for 3 days. We did a lot of hanging around all day Saturday.
Lucy did not want to be put down, but I finally figured out that putting her in the boppy still cuddled her enough for me to put her down briefly.
Saturday evening Sam ate dinner in the room with us and then snuggled up on the couch/bed to take over the remote.
Sunday (today) has consisted of even more hanging around and we were starting to get a little bored, so I decided we needed an activity - bath time!
After that she had a little tummy time.
Sam wanted to see what was going on up there in the big ol' crib!
Cheese!
At this point we are waiting for Lucy to get her third shot tomorrow morning. Hopefully by that time, they will know exactly what bacteria caused the UTI and which antibiotic to prescribe for it. She hasn't had any more fevers since yesterday morning, although the Rocephin is giving her tummy troubles. She's still being our tough baby girl and other then really wanting to be held a lot more than normal, she's been in pretty good spirits. We certainly appreciate all the prayers and keep them up so we can come home tomorrow!
